Hibiscus (also known as Agua de Jamaica) is an infusion of dried hibiscus flowers. If you love Mexican food you may have come across it already, as it's often a staple on the menu at the local taqueria.

And for good reason! It makes a super refreshing, slightly tart berrylike infusion. It's also loaded with vitamin C, can help with digestion, and even help lower blood pressure.  Add a splash of rum to the chilled hibiscus tea for an instant punch..!

To make Agua de Jamaica, you will need:

  • 50g of Karma Hibiscus Flowers
  • 150g of sugar
  • 1.5l of water
  • ½ cinnamon stick (optional)
  • add thin slices ginger (optional)
  • add lime juice (optional)
  • add lime (or orange slices for garnish)

In a pan, combine 1.5 litres of water and 150g of sugar. Bring to a boil until the sugar dissolves, and remove from the heat. Add the hibiscus flowers to the pot, along with the lime juice, cinnamon and ginger (as prefered).

Once cooled, transfer to the fridge, and leave to infuse overnight. The next day, strain the flowers, transfer to a jug and serve in tall glasses with ice.  Garnish with lime or orange slices.
